F-14 Tomcat

The F-14 is an old carrier based fighter which first flew on December 21, 1970 and is considerd by some to be one of the best fighters in the world today.

The role of the Tomcat is to provide long-range air defense of the US fleet. Armament for such a role includes air-to-air missles like the medium range sparrow and the close range AIM-9 sidewinders and a Gatling like multi-barreled cannon. Its primary interception armament is six Phoenix air-to-air missles, which are currently the longest range air-to-air missles anywhere in the world.

When production ended in March 1987, 554 F-14A's had been built.

The Tomcat is a two-seat carrier-based multi-role fighter and has two 20,900lb thrust Pratt & Whitney TF30-P-412A afterburning turbofans.

The Tomcat has a maximum speed of Mach 2.34 and a cruising speed of 460 to 633mph.
